buddypress 1.6.1 and Akismet

The codex says buddypress 1.6.1 has Akismet integration for activity items. Okay, so I upgraded to 1.6.1 from 1.5.6, do I have to install Akismet or is it already there? Also do I need a Akismet.com API key?

    Thanks for the help!

Yes, you need an Askimet.com API key if you want akismet integration with Activity Stream https://akismet.com/signup/

You definitely need an Akismet API key; for most people, these are free, so there shouldn’t be any problems. Your WordPress install probably already has the Akismet plugin installed, but you can install it from the Plugins Directory if it’s missing.

Thanks for the response. I will do that. Just a quick question, after getting the Akismet API kay and installing Akismet, how do I know if Akismet works against activity spams? Is there a way for me to test that?

In your WordPress admin area, there’s a “Activity” item in the main menu list. On this page, there’s a button to filter to view only spam posts, and if any have been marked as akismet, there’s a little label nearby that says “marked as spam by akismet” etc.

Thank you. So to know if akismet works, I will have to wait until the first spam is marked by akismet?

When the activity update is posted, there is the “Cleared by Akismet” text on the right. I think that means it’s working.
