@ronia Check out the Events Manager plugin by @netweblogic https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/events-manager/ Has BuddyPress support!

As for Media plugins compatible with BP
    1. free – BuddyPress Album – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-album/
    2. free – BuddyPress Media – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-media/
    3. premium – BP Gallery – http://buddydev.com/plugins/bp-gallery/

@mercime  Thanks! Events Manager is too convoluted and does not have basic features of an Event plugin ( who will attend/ not attend/may attend) – it is also not integrated with activity stream, that is, no comments can be made from activity stream to the event. In comparison – you can see oxwall.org which comes with integrated event (as well as photo)

BP Album is broken with BP 1.7 while BP Media is buggy with 1.7 and lacks tagging or marking directly on photo, a basic feature that is part of all real world social nets as well as scripts like elgg (free) or phpfox(paid).

@ronia I completely agree with you. Now, I am a big fan and supporter of BP, its team and all of their efforts. I hope none of these comments are taken as being unappreciative of what’s been done. I will add, however, that IMHO what keeps BP from going from good/great to amazing is the lack of event & media capabilities into core. It’s just too important and, sadly no one has stepped in to fill the breach. The plugins mentioned cannot be called serious efforts because of their glaring holes. BP-Media is vaporware and has been for years. Buddyvents is damn near close but needs updating. Keep waiting is the best answer that can be given.

I’m not sure that I’ve seen a huge amount of demand for event plugins specifically for BP in my experience. I hear more about media galleries, but again, it’s infrequent. It took a long time for WordPress itself to get a better media upload/interface. There’s no technical reason why a simple plugin couldn’t be built to use that.

The scope of the problem (“what is a media gallery”) is pretty huge, and means different things to different people, and I bet that any new plugin that picked a focused implementation which isn’t going to be ideal for everyone.

Demand is a strange thing, many users will come and download, and see that “basic”features are not there and will just move away to other scripts silently without much complaining.

Features are more or less defined by current standards OR like Apple who innovate and people think, OMG we did need this!

All real world social nets as well as scripts like Elgg, Oxwall etc have working media and event – it does NOT matter to most of us if it is in core or plug in because at the end of the day users of my site will use it, and it matters to them if they are able to use it satisfactorily and upto their current set of expectations.

I really have waited for 3 years or more, made repeated requests ….

Media – at its very basic should have photos/albums and ability to comment both from activity stream and in the page itself ( same comment) plus mark directly on photo.

Event – at its very basic – who will attend – Yes | No | Maybe

OT – commenting to blog from activity stream was never incorporated as well as privacy setting for blog ( friends only etc) AND inabilty to have different class/group of friends have been there for too long.

Paul – I would disagree. I am not suggesting that your point that just what constitutes a “gallery” varies by user. For sure it does. I don’t think that’s the issue. I think our friends at Facebook have demonstrated that the ability to upload, share and organize media (mostly images and video) is an essential ingredient to a social network. BuddyPress allows us to configure and design our network to suit the needs of our niche in ways FB and others do not. Therein lies its real value.

I can think of may use cases, tons actually, where this functionality is required (my community of gardeners, for example) to upload images and have proven functionality with them like tagging, sharing, commenting & activity streams.

The same goes for events given the social nature of the communities.

It’s not a light on the efforts done, just know the demand is DEFINITELY there

You guys are missing the point. Facebook is it’s own service and thus created its own functionality. You can create your own media functionality. It should be up to site owners to decide what that is.

I think that’s a separate but related point. Most BP site owners don’t have the chops to just “decide” they want media functionality and up and build it. None…None..of the existing offerings come close to what has become the standard now. I am not saying we have to match FB but we have nothing at this point.

Don’t interpret “very few sites have media in them” as “no one wants media in their sites” There just aren’t suitable offerings  Thus we wait.

I took the premium route and have used BP Gallery since 2010 for all BP installs. I’ve styled the galleries based on design, the different users have been happy with posting media from activity streams, group galleries or personal galleries. I’ve been satisfied with the support given by Brajesh. Happy users == headache-free me.

there are free and paid options that work well

Thanks for all the input. BUT I am seriously and urgently looking for a media (only photo will do) plug in – paid or free – that will allow just 3 things without any hitch or bump for BUDDYPRESS 1.7 beta :

    • ability to create album and upload photo with chosen privacy
    • ability to directly mark or tag on photo</li
    • comment to a photo from both activity stream and on the page itself`

BP Album is broken with BP 1.7
BP Media photo commenting from activity stream is buggy+ it has no photo marking
BuddyPics  keeps on giving error message : Warning: Division by zero in C:\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-content\plugins\BuddyPics-master\includes\bpa.template.tags.php on line 84 etc and does not actually upload a photo (fresh install of latest WP, BP 1.7, no other plugin)

BP Gallery – does it work ok with BP 1.7? Does it allow photo marking? Please answer if you know, also a link to a demo site with BP gallery + photo marking + BP 1.7 beta will be really really helpful.

Well as has been made clear on so many threads on this sort of requirement it aint part of BP core so BP and this forum can’t really be a lot of help.

The concerns you note above are all to do with third party plugins, you have roughly two options, fix those that are broken, approach the plugin author with request for features/commission additional work be done.

Other than that little more can be said.
