Buddypress Child Themes

Now, I’ve been mucking around with various cms/blogging whatnots for years, none are problem free. Now for my current needs Buddypress is the only one which is easy to install and the plug ins/themes are so easy to install, it’s all done for you. Wonderful.
Now my only problem is a theme. I want a darkish red theme for my site, and I’m trying to install ‘child themes’. I have followed all instructions, activated the child theme and not the parent theme but it just isn’t happening. I am on the verge of giving up entirely because I just want things to work without spending days hunting around for solutions, uninstalling, reinstalling. So many days………………………….
Can someone please give me a dullards guide on installing child themes. How I am doing it now because that’s what I’ve read, is to activate the child theme and not the parent theme. But it still ain’t happening.
