Buddypress & Continuum Theme…Help!!!

    @doncgarner

Hello to all, I have JUST freshly installed Buddypress Last night with No Hitches. I DIDN’T install the forums or the BBPress features because I wanted to do that when I needed to later. My Site is Currently using/in WP Maintenance Mode Plug-in (Only Plugin NOT Disabled)…All the other Plugins were de-activated before my BP install. I’m using ThemeForest’s Continuum Theme for WP. I ONLY Want Buddypress’s FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY…..NOT it’s template, at all, at least throughout the Content Pages & Categories on my site. I do want a MEMBERS site, with all of BP’s features for members when they join and become a part of my Artists community. However, I am STUCK!!! After the install What Do I Do Next, and HOW Do I Do It with the Continuum theme? Someone please point me to a step by step video of HOW to make my template Config to the Continuum theme that I want to use throught my site’s main content. I was on the Ning.com network before I dedcided to re-design my whole website community/network. Most of WP’s features are very understandable, but…..I can’t seem to fugure out for the life of me, how to make Buddypress work, within my website, and it’s continuum theme. Here’s what I need members to be able to do within the community……..

    1. Create a members/Artist profile upon Registration. re-directing them to completing their profile, and adding a bio, photos, music, videos, links, etc….within their profile after registration.

    2. NOT be able to see the WP Admin Panel AT ALL or have any access to it. Also NOT see WordPress login Screen while signing-up or signing in. Just a simple login screen. Don’t need Anyone to know the site is a WP installed platform AT All!!!…lol

    3. Members be able to UPLOAD music, videos, photos, files, etc, to their profiles, and designated pages within the website. Even add a Music or video player on profile page.

    4. Members to Video Chat with Multiple members or privately, with SAME Access Login they signed in with to the site.

    5. Members to be able to POST a blog topic in a MAIN Blog area, where ALL members’s Blogs display, and NOT have it interfere with any other POSTS for content, on the site by admin.

    6. Add Password protected pages where I can Monetize and offer Specific content for members. All pages are NOT going to be public, but ANYONE can join. Just don’t want them to get past a certain couple of pages without Becoming A Member 1st.

If anyone can help me with ANY of this, ESPECIALLY The BuddyPress SET-UP with my Cintinuum theme…please do so . As, I have a Launch Deadline of New Years Eve Midnight!!!! (Sign) If I can get the Buddypress Membership features working within My Template without changing the template….then I’m good. I just need members to see the current design theme, wnjoy the content, and still be able to sign-up for a new membership and get all of the buddypress features also. Thanks In Advance Friends…..Blessings.

  • A lot of these requests are not necessarily that straight forward, if you do not have the level of technical skills required you probably ought to be considering hiring a WP/BP developer to get your site running, especially as you have a somewhat unrealistic timescale involved here.

Getting BP compatible with your chosen theme, does require a little coding knowledge, basic level. You need to look through the BP codex documentation for the template pack walkthroughs which will guide you as to how to make BP template files compatible, also there’s a long list of themes already put through this process so check yours isn’t on it first.

More detailed help might be forthcoming but this isn’t the greatest time of year to be seeking detailed help as many on extended breaks at the moment.

Thanks Hugo. I do have some Basic HTML coding skills…I know how to copy/paste code, change code in a HTML editor, add images, links, and that sort of basics knowledge. I have a Graphic design Background, so I am very familiar with layout and content, and features. My Problem is “MY Template” I’ve designed my whole site in WP which is not a problem for me…but after adding the BuddyPress Sections to the TOP Menu in my template, I have drawn a blank….lol….there is NOTHING on Each Page when viewed in Preview Mode Browser. I do know, that I have to ADD widgets and other content to A Created page in WP/BuddyPress in order to get the content to DIsplay in my browser. However,….lol….I’m lost at the Which Widget, and Things to add to the BP pages (Activate, Register, Activity, Members) pages. I have added them in Apperarance>>Menus>>Top Menu>>Select (Those) Pages>>Then Add To Menu….I’ve done all of this. I just don’t know what to add from here, to get these pages and their content to show-up so that everything works in my Current theme. Do I have to pick another theme, or just NOT use buddypress, and find another WP Membership plug-in that allows PROFILES and Writing in a Blog that every member can read? Another theme is NOT an option at this time. All of the other features I described in my Original Post, can be added with a few plug-ins right? So All I REALLY Need BuddyPress for is The MEMBERSHIP, Profiles, and Members Search Features intergrated to work with The Continuum Theme. There shouls be a better way around this, and I still get the same results. ALL Of My Website Content IS CREATED!!!! I’m just adding Members access, sign-up, and create a profile. Thanks.

@doncgarner as Hugo mentioned above, we have a list of walkthroughs aka “template-packed” WordPress in the Codex. Here’s the link for the Continuum theme before http://wp.me/p1I84P-36

The Template packed link you posted is just whay it seems that I need, but there is ALOT of Code on that article. Do I have to Add ALL of that code in the places specified? WOW, hope not. I thought it would just be a few places to change some of the code to make it compatible with BP. I’m still stuck, can’t launch a membership/artist community without membership features. Thanks @mercime and Hugo. I’ll keep trying. Using another template right now…is NOT an option becaus eall of the content would have problems that I would have to go in and fix, and make look right. I wish it was as easy as leaving every page, category, tag with content AS-IS…and then pick a new template that works with buddypress, and activate it….and EVERYTHING would display as it should…without a hitch in the new Compatible template. Is that possible, or I should just use the above mentioned option in the link you gave me? Thanks, Blessings.

@doncgarner as of the version I helped with, yes, you would have to add all that code to the BP template files. It all depends on the theme. Open up your theme’s page.php and you’ll see the amount of code added by the theme author to give you all the options added to the theme. Other WP themes required only 2 files for BP compatibility or just less code.

You could wait for BP 1.7 coming up https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/roadmap sometime next year where you do not need to change anything in your template files at all (unless you want to totally customize the BP pages further).

Thanks a bunch @mercime….Blessings. Can’t wait on the new, but will upgrade when it comesout. However, for now I’ll just try looking at another template like Salutation or Something else. Just hope making changes to everything thats formatted in the Continuum theme, won’t give me too much of a problem when I change themes…lol…Praying on that one…

    Wow Don,
I am doing almost the same thing as you! I am using buddy press with rtmedia, a membership plugin and more. I have WimTVPro for my live video plugin, but haven’t tested it yet.
It seems you have more experience with coding than I do.
Just wondered how things are working for you and see if you may be able to provide some assistance for me.
    Thanks,
    Andrew
