Buddypress Legacy Files – Up-to-date?

    Hello there,

during the last couple of days I started working with Buddypress and I think I got the basics by now. Right now I am working on a custom theme and wanted to edit the look and feel of buddypress aswell.

I read a few things and I am not sure if I am doing it right. Don’t get me wrong here – It’s no problem to use the legacy files, as described. But what I asking myself is – Are those legacy files do have the same features as the “normal” Buddypress, and are they updated regularly, whenever buddypress gets an update? Somewhere I read, that legacy files are based on 1.7 of Buddypress. Is that true?

If not – Is it better to go another way with a custom theme?

Thank you for your help. Oh, and I am using the newest versions of Buddypress and WordPress.

    Best regards!

    @shanebp

The current files re themes are here:
    buddypress\bp-templates\bp-legacy\

You should always use those when overloading to a theme or child theme.

The use of ‘legacy’ in the dir name is unfortunate and confusing, imo.

Thanks for your quick answer shanebp!

But as I read different statements, the thing that really interests me is, if the legacy-files do present the same features as the core buddypress. Or will I lose any feature or functionality if I overwrite the core with those them files?

    Thanks again!

Basically, the core uses these files for display:
    buddypress\bp-templates\bp-legacy\

If you want to change the display, you can overload those files and thereby avoid changing anything in the BP plugin folder.

    Hey shanebp,

just wanted to thank you for your help! 🙂

They’re legacy in the optimistic hope that we’ll build new templates sometime this year (2016). I think it’ll happen.
