buddypress members search errors

Im using the default buddypress member search and the results are very inconsistent.

When searching for eg. “john doe” it will find the user. If just typing the surname into the search then it will not find the user and return no results. “doe ” with a space will find the user for some strange reason.

This thread seems to have a similar issue but no fixes for it: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/cant-search-for-multiple-words-in-memory-directory/

Any ideas why this is?

This might not fix the problem but have you tried BP Profile Search?

Hi Henry, thanks ive tried that plugin, its not quite what im after.
Ive also tried https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-global-search/installation/ which was just as inconsistent.

We did import all the users through a database import through a custom script, which we suspect might have caused problems. dont know if that helps at all.
