Buddypress user registration with MU

It was my understanding that user who registered on a Buddypress sites with wordpress MU are always subscribed as “subscribers” on the root site or main site. But, I have now realized that my users, over 20K, are registered on the Admin Network, but they are not subscribers in any site on the network. They can login and access all the sites, but they are not users of any of them. Has this changed? ArenĀ“t new users subscribers of the root site by default? Is there a way to accomplish that?

“t new users subscribers of the root site by default?” – I did have this setup for a while, I am leaning towards this being a plugin and setting within that.. but it may have just been a setting. There is a “join my multisite” plugin that I am using on that site – they two may be connected, or not.. it’s been a while. Memory foggy at the moment.

I don’t think we’ve consciously changed this behaviour (if this indeed happens as you say) in the last couple of years. It’s possible that something in WordPress changed the behviour with however BuddyPress adds sites internally.

I think I just about recall some conversation from four or five years ago about this, but I’m struggling to remember what it was about precisely, or even where to look. If I were to start investigating this, I’d set up an otherwise identical multisite (without BuddyPress) and add users via the wp-admin, and see if those users becomes subscribers or not. etc.

I can probably disable Buddypress on muy dev site and try to register to see what happens. I will do that today and let you know @djpaul

Many thanks to both of you for your replies!
