Can I allow a registered user to create multiple profiles under one account?

First of all, this question is slightly complicated by the fact that I am still having trouble getting my registration page to function, so I’m not sure whether I will be using the BuddyPress profiles, or another plugin.
Anyway, our site is basically family-oriented, and I wanted the users to be able to set up an account (as a family), and then have multiple ‘offshoot’ profiles for the members of the family. Is this even a possibility?
