Can’t add users to a group

I realize this topic has been covered multiple times, but I can’t find a solution that works for me.
I can’t add users to BuddyPress and BuddyPress is pretty useless without users. I can’t send out invites because I have no friends. I’ve tried adding users from the WP dashboard, by clicking edit on My_Group /add users, but nothing happens.
I am using WP vers 4.9.8 running a DIVI theme and am trying to use BuddyPress vers 4.0.0 . Since I’m trying to create a password protected closed group, I am also trying to run BuddyPress Members Only, although it is currently inactive.

Add users manually is easy.
Go to .../wp-admin/users.php on your website and click on the button at the top that says ‘Add New‘.

Re add users to group in wp-admin:
Please see this sticky topic.

To narrow down problems, use a default WP theme like 2016.
Deactivate other plugins.
After everything is working, then start using your preferred assets.
