Capital Letters in BuddyPress Usernames

I know that there is a trac ticket on this topic but I was still not able to allow capital letters. the plugin from serge that allows capitals but it doesn’t recognize admin and Admin as the same username so it would allow for multiples of the same letter combination. I’m wondering if there is any new plugins out that would work for this? I am not the most literate when it comes to code so I’m not able to go into plugins and edit them to suit my needs unfortunately.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Add this to functions.php or bp-custom.php

define( ‘BP_ENABLE_USERNAME_COMPATIBILITY_MODE’, true );

I tried adding it to my functions file is my theme (using suffusion w/ the suffusion buddypress plugin) and it still didn’t work. is there any special place in the file I should be adding it in? I am using a child theme as well, should I put my functions.php file into the child theme? I don’t think that would make much of a difference in this case would it?
