Category-based Site Forums and Group Forums – help please

  • BillMc

Let’s say I create groups – plumbers, doctors, mechanics. I can create group forums for each occupation and the group forum content will tend to be specific and relevant only to members of that group.

I would also like to have a group of site wide category forums that are relevant to all members: Accounting Issues, Computer Issues, Legal Issues where anyone can participate regardless of goup membership.

I can create the group forums and I can also create a site-wide forum but what I don’t know how to do is create the categories within the site-wide forum and enable it so a poster would be able to select the category for his/her topic.

I also want to be able to include both group forum and category site-wide content in an activity stream.

I am migrating from Ning where I am able to do these things but am stuck on how to make it work in BP. It’s probably obvious but I am so new to BP that I am struggling. Thanks much for any input.

@billmc site wide forums use bbpress theres more info there but i found the process pretty strait forward personally for site wide forums and topics i think you’d want to use separate forums in the main forum list for your categories. check for more info on that stuff.

any group or site wide forum post should generate an activity entry.

Thanks Ben – I’m beginning to figure this out. I looked at the bbpress site and their forum “home” page” is pretty much what I am looking to do. It looks like formatting/layout within my theme (salutation) will be the main challenge. Thanks again for your input.

If you’re doing anything new with forums, use bbPress 2 (aka Site Wide Forums).
