Changing text in activity stream

Can I change the text of the news items in the activity stream? If so how?
For example, instead of it saying “posted on forum topic” which it does on my install when someone replies to a forum topic, I want to have it changed to say “Reply to forum topic”. Is there a quick and easy way to do this? Note, installing a newer version of buddy press is not an option right now, so we’ll have to understand how to make the change on my install as is.
