Clean Install on Ubuntu server, but when I type in URL I get a blank page

  • Hi everyone, I’m very impressed with the ease of the installation of WordPress and Buddypress. I need some help, I’m stumped! I did a clean install of WordPress 3.0.1 with Buddypress 1.2.5.2 with no problems from start to finish. I’m not a super tech I just happen to stumble upon this project and was drawn to it… All links work I can even add groups. But when I type in my url from a neighbors computer, smartphone, etc. I get a BLANK page? I have not activated any plugins yet. I installed it on my home server. I installed it to http://localhost/wordpress/ . Can someone help me? What am I missing?

Thanks in Advance, Fernando in Texas :)

  • When you say type in url from a neighbours computer what exactly are you typing? what means have you set up so that your LAN responds to http requests, only ask as you state your not a super tech but you do have basic network knowledge? You have a fixed IP ? Your firewall, router passes port 80 requests through to your server? You arae aware that ‘localhost’ is a loopback address it can only ever be seen from the machine you’re working on and refers to that machine, localhost never broadcasts as it were to a WAN and can’t be seen from outside.

Hi hnla, thanks for the response. Yes to all your questions except that I was not aware that localhost is a loopback address. So I should have typed in my website address where it ask me what was my url and where to put wordpress? I suspect that is where I messed up. I there anything I can do? Or should I just start all over again?

    Thanks in advance, Fernando :)
