Confused about xprofile_filter_link_profile_data

So I’ve been trying to add my own custom field types to buddypress – and so have downloaded and modified the Buddypress Xprofile Custom Fields Type plugin. I simplified the plugin a lot – removed loads of code and got it down to the bare minimum – then I started adding the new fields I wanted.

Everything works great except one thing – the xprofile_filter_link_profile_data filter.

I understand what the filter is doing – but I don’t understand why. Linkifying stuff is good – but why turn everything into member searches? For instance I added a regular text box to use as a bio field – but if a user enters less than 5 words it gets turned into a link. I don’t get it.

I should note this is simply a query. I’ve disabled the filter and everything works as I would expect – but I want to make sure I am not removing functionality that is required for something I haven’t considered 🙂
