Creating a Member Directory

    @sarahdaglish

I’m sorry for the very newbie type question but my Buddypress is giving me trouble. I have set up buddypress as an intranet site for members of staff only, and bolted onto our external website which is designed through wordpress.

I originally had a lot of difficulty seeing how my buddypress members could see a directory for all members or all groups. I realise that in order to see this list they need to go to the page I created for the Members. I have downloaded the Buddypress Custom Profile Menu and tried to add the members page to the directory that way, but it just shows the members list for that user (ie those that they are already friends with). When I tried adding a direct link to the members page it tends to add the members name into the URL, which again removes any members that aren’t friends with the user. Can anyone help me see where I am going wrong?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

How did you create that page?
You should just create a page titled ‘Members’. The page should be blank.
You then assign that page to the Members component through Settings > BuddyPress
You should then be able to see a listing of all active members by visiting:
    …yoursite.com/members/

Or is your issue just about navigation?

    Hi,

I’ve created the members page, but I cannot create a link that my members can navigate to to get to that page.

I didn’t want to ask them to use the URL to find that page. I just wanted a really easy way for them to click on a link to see all members of the site.

If you mean add a link to navigation, you can do that via …/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

If you want to add it elsewhere, it’s just a simple link.

It sounds like you are having trouble adding the link in a specific place.
So you need to be specific about that place.

Thank you for your help. I’m not an IT person so I’ve decided to make it nice and simple and I’ve downloaded the automatic friends plugin so every joiner becomes friends with everyone-else automatically, thus negating the need for a member directory. Thank you for your help though.

Just because you might be interested, I did set up a custom profile menu and put in the URL for my members page, however the members directory page showed as a web page within my web page (ie two lots of menu bar), so I’m wondering if the issue was down to the bespoke website template that we are using.

Either way, it’s sorted now! Thank you again for your help 🙂
