Deep integration of Google Docs
-
Deep integration with Google Docs would allow for pitching BP to companies as a serious business tool. Will immediately solve 3 important needs: storage, management and collaboration of documents.

Great Idea!!!

But I think, that would be something for a Plugin-Dev, not for the core-team …
Certainly would make an excellent plugin. Perhaps even to begin with just allowing google documents to somehow be tracked in the activity stream and linked to groups. Start small.
@ Peter Anselmo
Oh, didn’t know about the Group Documents. Obviously haven’t used it but looks good. Could there possibly be an upside with a google docs option? There are 1 GB free storage, really good editors, folder structure asf. I think it would be a real killer!
yep – would be great!
people willing to code this raise your hand i would use this!
Not to try and pimp the Group Wiki plugin too much but it’s probably closer to a group collaborative document / group file storage method than a real wiki (hence close to some aspects of GoogleDocs).
Unfortunately at our University we aren’t able to make use of googledocs for student work due to concerns over the hosting of the data, otherwise we probably would have gone this route rather than the wiki route.
Would one be better of starting with GW plugin rather than start from scratch? Aslo, would be cool to get Peter Anselmo’s view on this topic.
Personally, I think it’s different enough from current group docs to merit it’s own plugin. My plugin is more geared to locally-created documents of all types, and people are mostly using it to share existing PDFs. I should actually broaden the marketing of my plugin some, because it can be used for all types of media.
My primary concern with adapting the current Group Docs to use Google would be keeping a consistent user-interface while browsing both. Or making the UI different enough that people don’t get confused. I think it’d be tough, and I don’t see many people using both. I imagine most users would want one or the other.
Great idea though, I’d love to pitch in if someone wants to get the ball rolling.
Just Found this, Could be a springboard

Hey Peter and thanks for chiming in!
In terms of storage, docs know supports any type of document
To clearify, Google Docs know supports storage of any media/document type, ie you don’t have to convert to their format. PDF creation and viewing also supported. But, as you say, consistent user-interface is very important and can be tricky in this case.
any news about this? i’m highly interested in this … and if i got some money left from Jeff’s Privacy Plugin, the LifeStream-extension (btw i’m still looking for developers) i would donate for this too!
are no news good (or bad) news?
No news from here. I still find it interesting, but haven’t had any time to take a closer look.
looking forward to your “closer look”
I had a quick look at the API for GoogleDocs and I think that Andy Peatling’s suggestion of tracking the documents in the activity stream is a good one as there is a revisions method.
In addition to storage, management and collaboration, there would also be a possibility of In-line/ in-site editing of documents.
I love the Idea …
@thebiga do you think this would be also be possible with “your aggregator” ?
Is anyone following this Idea now?
bump?
Docs just added drawing to the toolset which would be awesome for brainstorming in groups.
This is a bit over my coding skills, so all one can do is to advocate the geniousness of this idea and perhaps do some research
The Documents List Data API guide is here. There are 3 protocoll versions and only the first has a official php library (Zend). I’ve been digging around the web to find nifty integration examples but have not seen any worth the mention. Anyone else?
