Default Friend Or Default Messaging

I am trying to increase user interaction on my bp site.
Is there a way to add a default friend upon signup. There’s been a plugin written, but I can’t get it to work.
If not, is there a way to create a default message after signup. Maybe a message from the admin saying hello?
Any functions or plugins I should use? Any ideas would be very helpful!!
