Display members based on profile field data

Hello,
I’m very new to backend/php and need some help changing how members are displayed on the members page.
Instead of displaying one column listing all members, I would like to display two columns of members based on member’s profile data. (Example: Column one displays “dogs” and column 2 displays “cats.”)
Should I be attempting to customize the code in the members-loop.php file? Is there any other information you can direct me to?
