I had actually already tried that before posting, and it says it hasn’t been tested with my version. All it did was break my registration system.
As a workaround, I found a plugin that let me change the registration username/password email, and inserted instructions on how to change their nickname.
It would still be nice if people automatically had their username for their nickname like they expected, lol.

This Plugin may help, tested on a single site, hasn’t been tested on a multi-site install. I was having the same issue, so I had this developed. Let me know if it works for you.
