Do any plugins exist that recommend who you should follow when registering?

    One of the registration steps on Twitter is to present users a bunch of celebritys’ profiles they should click to follow, so that your newsfeed will have some activity on Day 1. I think that Twitter tries to get you following 5 people when you register.

    Is there a plugin or hack that does the same for Buddypress?

    Negative! Sorry if you was hoping for a better answer but I have not seen this functionality yet and I have been snooping around BuddyPress for a good while. “But you can always build this functionality if you have coding skills.”
