Do I need to create a group for people to use Buddypress on my site?
-
I guess I had a picture in my head of how this would work: I would have a tab on my website “Community” and people could click on that, enter a screen name and password, and then they would be able to access the discussion forum. Not sure if that’s how it works!
I am a WordPress novice but can follow instructions fairly well. (my site is http://www.emmastangl.com)
So my questions are as follows:
1) Do i have to “create a group” in order for people to be able to join my discussion forum? I just want one plain old discussion board, with multiple topics.
2) It says you have to have registration enabled, so people can register. How do I make sure it’s enabled?
Here is my the initial info we are supposed to provide when asking for help:
1. Which version of WP/MU are you running? WordPress 3.2 (I don’t even know what WordPress MU is)
2. Did you install WP/MU as a directory or subdomain install? It’s my main website, so I think “directory”
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? I am pretty sure it is just to http://www.emmastangl.com
4. Did you upgrade from a previous version of WP/MU? If so, from which version? I was using WordPress 3.1.2 I think
5. Was WP/MU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes
6. Which version of BP are you running? 1.2.9
7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? No, I downloaded it today for the first time
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? If so, which ones? I have installed a bunch that I’m not really using yet, but I guess they are still running in the background. Ad-Minister, Akismet (not registered), BuddyPress template pack, Contact Form 7, FlickRSS, Jetpack, My Page Order, Permalink Editor, Really Simple CAPTCHA, Simple Tags, WordPress Importer, WordPress Popular Posts, WP-PageNavi, WP Simple Paypal Shopping Cart, Yet Another Related Posts Plugin
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? I have been using the Mantra theme, I did not realize it was not compatible with Buddypress. I downloaded the Buddypress Template Pack plugin, and the test worked (going to my site and looking at options under “My Account”, but since I don’t know how Buddypress is supposed to work I can’t really tell whether I have access to all the functions or not. It seemed to show up OK visually, although it moved the contents of my sidebar downwards.
10. Have you modified the core files in any way? I don’t think so
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? ummm I don’t think so
12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? I don’t know, in buddypress setup I selected “use a new installation”, and it did it. Should I have said “use an existing”? Again, I just did this today so hopefully that tells you which version it is
13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. I do not know how to access this information
14. Which company provides your hosting? Bluehost
15. Is your server running Windows, or if Linux; Apache, nginx or something else? I don’t know. I have a Windows computer.
