Does BuddyPress have to Network Activate?

  • Ok, I should probably preface by saying what I’m hoping to accomplish with my WordPress Network. I need to have the following components for my site:

    1. Home Pages/Blog (general information about the business)
    2. Online Store/Shopping Cart (to purchase classes/workshops/events)
    3. Online Courses (feature training videos & other materials)

I was thinking that I could use the Network feature to have three separate sites that would all be linked/combined together to form one. I was thinking I’d install BuddyPress & BuddyPress ScholarPress Courseware on the courses site; install a Paypal or e-commerce plugin on the store site and leave the pages/blog alone. I was thinking I’d use the same overall theme for all of them.

Is this even possible to do?

I have installed the BuddyPress plugin and I’ve setup my Network options so that the admin’s can activate their own plugins. However, BuddyPress doesn’t show up on the plugin list for the admin’s. Does BuddyPress have to be activated on the entire Network?

If so, is there a way I can get rid of all the social networking/course features on my Home, Blog and Store features? I kind of really wanted the course stuff to just be on the course page. I wanted the store login to be the same, but not have the course stuff there.

I may be asking for a feature that just isn’t possible. If anyone can provide feedback, I’d greatly appreciate it.
