dots in the username URL?

Hey guys..
some of my usernames in BP have DOTS .. (which works) however the URL to the user profile converts the DOTS to DASHES
Any ideas on how to allow DOTS
OR
Is there a plugin that *matches the closest user instead of throwing up a 404 error
