Email Notifications Not Working

    @davidkey772

I have been trying to resolve this issue for months and thought it had worked itself out with the new version of BP – but it hasn’t.

Basically, the members are not receiving ANY notification emails from our site. I have checked and double checked and they are enabled. I’ve searched the forums – no joy. It would seem that members should be receiving notifications but email when they post an update, comment etc. but nothing happens.

I am NOT php savvy but do know my way round WP and am generally quite technically adept.

I wondered if it was something to do with the way email was sent from the site – e.g. an SMTP or WP Mail issue but I can’t work it out.

I have even paid a developer to look at the issue and he’s been unable to resolve it. Please can someone help?

Sorry… forgot to say that I’m running WP v4.4.2 and BP v2.5.1

Also forgot to say that, if I go into the Dashboard > Emails I CAN see a list of all the notification emails I SHOULD have received…

We should be able to figure this out. 🙂

    Where is your website hosted?

Does your site send WordPress emails, without any other plugin activated, and using the default theme? For example, comment moderation / notification emails.

Thank you SO much for engaging and for your optimism…

The site is hosted with a small company called Green Web.I have several other sites hosted with them using WP and they all send email form the sites fine. For this reason, I don’t think it’s a server issue. None of these other sites have BP though.

The site that has BP – the one I have the issue with – has a plugin that sends emails to notify about new blog posts: that works fine. Also, other WP admin notifications (password changes, new registrations, etc.) all work fine.

The theme is custom built – but as I mentioned, other types of email notification are working fine with this theme. It’s just the BP email notifications…

You say you’ve been trying to resolve this issue “for months” — I assume that was with versions of BuddyPress older than v2.5?

Can you list all the plugins you have active on the site that doesn’t send emails?

    Which plugin is this?

Yes, the issue has been there since day one – and I searched for plugins to add this functionality but couldn’t find one that worked. Then I saw the new BP update with the added BP Email functionality and I realised that a/. this functionality indeed hadn’t been there before and b/. it had now been officially added as a part of BP’s core code.

The plugin that sends new blog post notifications is:

Here’s a list of ALL the plugins on the site:

From looking at those plugins, I am pretty sure welcome-email-editor will not work with BuddyPress. It won’t be causing the deliverability problems, but just a heads-up.

@davidkey772 Download this plugin from the following link, and add it and activate it on your site: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yz1155axhbyntw7/bp-email-debug-2.php?dl=0

Then do something that should trigger a BuddyPress email. For example, if you are using the Activity component, have one user write a message on the activity stream, then have a second user reply to that activity message.

Since you’ve said normal WordPress emails are being sent out OK, this plugin will email some debug information to the site owner’s email address. Once you have received at least one debug email, you can turn off the plugin!

Please let me know what the debug email says.

    Thank you.

I get this message when I try to upload the plugin to WP:
    =
The package could not be installed. PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature
    =

    ?

I haven’t managed to upload the debug plugin but I have deleted the welcome email editor plugin. I then decided to try testing the site as you suggest – without having run the debug.

To test the system I have two logins – A (admin) and (B) member. When I login as B and post to a group that I am also in as A, A DOESN’T get a notification. HOWEVER, If I then comment as A B DOES get a notification.

I also get a notification if I post a friend request or send a personal message between A and B.

So… I’m wondering if I’ve messed up? I have made an assumption that I should get a notification email if someone posts in a group that I am also in? Am I right to expect this?!

That PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT sounds like a common problem with WordPress. I suggest you Google it (it might be a lack of disk space).

By “notification”, do you mean an email? Or a notification in the toolbar? Or both?

    An email.

From memory, if someone posts to the activity stream of a group you are a member of, you only get a email notification if someone mentions your name directly.

Paul – I’m having the same problem. I managed to install your PHP email debuger. I triggered a private DM in Buddypress and received “Email delivered – True”. However, there was no Buddypress notification email received on my inbox.

    Anything else?
