Error message file_exists() [function.file-exists]

    I’ve got Buddypress 1.5.1 running on a single blog WordPress 3.2.1 installation in the root directory of a NearlyFreeSpeech.net hosting account. It uses the included Buddypress theme with a custom style sheet and a whole raft of plugins I could list if necessary, but they were all in use with no trouble before I noticed this issue a few weeks ago.

    Whenever a list view is changed, like filtering the activity stream or selecting newest, active or popular in the group sidebar widget, this message appears before every item in the list:
    `Warning: file_exists() [function.file-exists]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/group-avatars/53) is not within the allowed path(s): (/f5/*root directory*/:/nfsn/apps/php53/lib/php/:/nfsn/apps/php5/lib/php/:/nfsn/apps/php/lib/php/) in /f5/*root directory*/public/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php on line 195`

    Additionally the avatars in the list are the automatically generated wavatars and not whatever the users may have uploaded.

    Does anyone have an idea what may be causing this?

    open_basedir. If you can’t edit your php.ini, send that to your host and ask them to either add the uploads path to open_basedir, or to disable that option.
