Error on top of pages

Hello, I am working on a website for my community. I am installing this on a server using ISPConfig 2 that also runs a few other small sites. I have successfully installed BuddyPress on a machine running only a single webpage but I am lost on this installation of BuddyPress and I think the problem is because of the shared hosting server.

This is the error I get:
Warning: file_exists() [function.file-exists]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/avatars/1) is not within the allowed path(s): (/var/www/webXX/) in /var/www/webXX/web/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php on line 123

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I don’t expect anyone to be able to give me an exact solution, but if you can give me the scent of the trail to follow at least, that would be great.

I got the errors to go away by disabling PHP Safe Mode on the ISPConfig 2 server… Now I am working on other issues, like no button to create a group, but I will figure that stuff out. I hope someone that has the same issue finds this helpful.
