Can someone explain the @mention and how to use it on the site???

Okay a I know about Twitter. I clicked on my “mention” and I got this response:

Sorry, there was no activity found. Please try a different filter.

So do I go to my friends page to mention….I tried in my comments to @name but nothing happened…lost here.
