    @Dfa327 Have you tested the chat plugin you wrote on 1.2 by chance?

    Mike

    buddypress Ajax chat is his plugin and with adding the plugin-template.php to the default theme, it looks great on my site.

    @Symm2112 I know but he gave the impression that he had not checked out his plugin in 1.2 and wanted everyone to put it thru it’s paces in the new version and tell him what to fix, which ought to be his responsibility as plugin author

    just an update on bowob: it did work completely after I deinstalled the achievement plugin ……

    It is $40 for 150.000 loads / meaning: ad free which was my primary motive to move to a more cost effective solution. If you do have that many pageloads a day then its a good and fast solution imho (no ties at all to this product or the creator)

    Hi,

    I started to re-write the plugin so that it is trivial to upgrade if need be. It pisses me off to re-enter stuff in multiple pages after I upgrade the plugin. so I’m working on that.

    I did manage to get it to work in bp 1.2. I wrote my own template-plugin.php function in my version. I wrote many plugins based on that being there so I’ve been updating them too and need to release. Twire is a MESS with the new bp 1.2 so that is sucking a lot of my time too.

    I’m on vacation and even now this is about the only free time I have on it:( I need a clone, lol!

    I would suggest using the Wibiya tool bar – creates an as near as possible solution as Facebook. Works really well and it’s free.

    (obviously it has nothing to do with BP and won’t integrate with the DB to see friends but it’s good for site visitors to chat to each other)

    So… I had bowob on my site which I still think is the most fastest and the one users most like. Its also the simplest to install: just activate the plugin sitewide and presto. It was however also the most expensive it costs 40 dollar per 150.000 loads. I think they need to change their pricing schema because that is really a) expensive b) confusing. The cost was mainly why I looked for another solution.

    – arrowchat does not have a teamroom and no bp integration and as far as i can see its not out yet

    – wibiya provides a nice toolbar but the login is a hassle to login via e.g. facebook and another via twitter, i want to have the user account from my own site

    – i now have cometchat enabled but users find the “common chatroom” almost never. I currently have the problem that it keeps counting online users even when they are long gone

    I have not tried webbychat yet maybe thats an idea to test that one also concerning the load. Bowob took abou 50% of my server resources when people where chatting happily away and basically cometchat does the same.

    also notice that ALL of these even bowob which resides on another server take a huge load on your server. It pretty much does not matter which one you choose.

    I think….. a buddypress chatbar that would work the same as bowob would be very cool to have :) this is a nice start: http://ryan.rawswift.com/sandbox/jixedbar-0.0.2/demo/

    I just updated the buddypress-ajax-chat plugin so that it is now trivial to install just like all the other plugins. Please let me know if you have any issues with it.

    Thanks,

    Dave:)

    Thanks Dfa327… but where to download? The repository at wordpress.org doesn’t seem to be updated?

    I click on “activate site wide” and I get “can’t open file” on an empty screen. However when I go back it is activated site-wide. When I then click on chat I go to my admin screen and a chat window but that says “logged out” and it keeps reloading the page. the top bar does contain the 2 chat options. When I click the other option, the shoutbox, it uhm does nothing. So I think the initial cant open file caused this. I still have it activated see it on http://farmvillechicken.com ( though bowob is also running and cometchat is also installed but not currently active………)

    ok chmod config dir then ran the makeconfigfile procedure manually by placing it in a separate php – works.

    Back to the topic of this thread:

    I tried it but I think users who are not logged in are not engaged in an instant conversation as is now is on the site. I feel they should be “instantly” be part of the community and have the chatbar open on any part like a constant open shout box.

    I’m not sure what the demand for it would be as it’s very expensive, but I use

    http://www.123flashchat.com/

    They sell 2 primary applications, a group chat system and an instant messenger service. I purchased the unlimited license on both products and had them totally integrated into my elgg platform. Needless to say it’s pretty amazing software and my users loved it. Especially the live audio/video chat, that was a huge hit.

    Of course you really need a dedicated adobe flash comm server to run it properly. I still use the messenger program to this day and have thousands of users on at all times. It has never once crashed on me, and has become a great replacement for msn messenger for our family/friends.

    I am seriously considering having this added as a bp plugin, however the company is from Japan, and to put it nicely, their english skills are lacking. It took months of back and forth before they understood what I wanted with the elgg install. If I do get it ported to bp, this time I will probably just hire the job out to someone who speaks english lol….

    It is a very strong codebase, and there are sites with millions of users using this software, so it does expand via the multi-server edition. I never had a need to go beyond 3 servers, 1 of which was the flash comm server.

    Because this is the thread about it I found 2 more that were not mentioned:

    http://www.123flashchat.com/web-messenger-chat.html ( i dont know if it integrates with buddypress)

    http://www.gixawchat.com/

    and this developer project:

    Gmail/Facebook Style jQuery Chat

    123flashchat looks interesting it says:

    <script language="javascript">
    var username_123webmessenger=<?php echo $_SESSION['user'];?>
    </script>

    to integrate it uhm have to lookup for buddypress/wp what the current logged in username is.

    I took a first look and I decided I let their people do a $19 per month (1 month) install of the hosted option to check it out. When I dive in the tech specs on their site: i’m glad that I found the first professional solution out there.

    I did not find anything even remotely comparable up until now.

    It is expensive though. I only have very limited budget.

    It is more than possible to integrate 123flashchat with buddypress users and groups. It would be no different than what I had done with my elgg setup. Pretty much flashchat can hook into any users database so long as it contains the username/pass.

    flashchat has the capability of having unlimited chat rooms (groups), so it would require a script to auto-generate a new chat room upon group creation. Then it’s simply a matter of tying the user system together.

    When I get the time I will read through all the code in my elgg install, so that I can get a clear picture of how they integrated it for me. The language barrier was SO bad that I gave up on them and just kept sending trouble tickets until they got it all right.

    The web-messenger also would tie in the same way. There is even a ‘facebook’ bar available for that. However messenger is more like msn messenger than a chat system. It’s one-on-one chat instead of multi-user. I still use that system every day, as do thousands of my members.

    You are correct, there really is not a comparable product anywhere else. Yes, it is crazy expensive, but really worth it.

    @Dave: in v1.1.8.1, without adding/moving the plugin-template.php to the default theme, I still get a

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_chat_plugin_template() …wp-contentpluginsbuddypress-ajax-chatbp-chat.php on line 262

    !? Even with adding plugin-template.php this occurs. I can’t get this plugin to work :-(

    I found this – http://ajaxim.com/ and it looks what it does what you all have been talking about, Free, open source, and easy to implement. Haven’t tried it on my site yet, but I would love to see someone mod it to only allow bpress logged in users to use it.

    I was using http://bar.meebo.com

    It does not use the database but I find that it doesn’t matter as much as you think. It pulls in chats from gchat aim facebook.

    That’s exactly what Dave’s buddypress-ajax-chat plugin does. Check it out.

    is no one using the BP Chat module from Buddydev.com… its free… and kinda decent… http://buddydev.com/buddypress/bp-chat-a-facebook-like-chatting-plugin-for-buddypress/

    am sure it’ll be improved as time goes on by, but right now there are a few holes in it still… was wondering if there is a better alternative out there…
