Facebook + Twitter like application

Hi all,
I am planning an application in which I need users can add friends. But only a particular ROLE of users can add each other as friends.
For example : There is a ROLE called Professionals. Now all users with Professionals ROLE can add each other as friends but no other user can. But all users can follow professionals.
Now for following I have used BuddyPress Followers. But I am not able to simulate the 1st problem of selective friendship.
Any ideas..???
