Feature/plugin request – RSS to Group Wire

I’m hoping to find a way to have specific RSS feeds create wire posts on group wires. For example, I’d like to post the baseball team news from our athletics site to a Baseball specific group in BP. The simplest thing I can come up with is if there was a feed field for each group that would take new feed items and create wire posts from them. The wire posts would be the most useful since they would appear on the sitewide activity stream.

I have considered using the Twitter to Wire plugin (not currently working on my trunk 1407 install) to take Twitter Tools WP (used to build our sites) output and make it wire posts, but that would require a separate Twitter account for each of our sports plus any other activity/department for which we already generate RSS feeds.

    Hey,

That’s a good idea. Not sure if this would be better as a 3rd party addon or as a enhancement suggestion for future versions of BP.

I’m all for either. My goal is to find ways to tie in all of our tools, RSS, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, etc so that we’re sharing/building content across channels. Autopopulating group wires with specific topic news feeds (and possibly related Tweet streams, etc) seems like a reasonable way to generate traffic, garner feedback/comments/activity in groups and hopefully by extension facilitate user interaction with friends and other groups.

i’ve been looking for exactly the same – has anyone been finding a solution?

however, in addition i’d also like to have a group wire rss source, that would be perfect!

Hey mates, I’ve been trying to work this out as well.

Been trying Andy’s External Blogs RSS and Group Twitter Plugins

    with WPmu 2.9.2

They work well within the Groups,

But they seem to have this feature of updating the Group Activity Feed every time a user visits the group.

So I get double / multiple posts.

+ with the Group Notifications Plugin, I get multiple emails

every time someone visits the group and refreshes the feed.

Any Ideas how I could at least shut off the refresh every time someone visits the group.

If this is manageable, they’re both great and very useful plugins.

Please let me know your thoughts and solutions.

Old topic — there isn’t even a wire anymore.

For my part, the newest versions of both of Andy’s plugins on the latest BP 1.2.x work fine, with the duplicates issue long since solved.

I’m on 1.2.3 and getting duplicates in the group activities.

+ dupes through the group-notifications plugin.

    Check: http://vybee.net/groups/testfeeds01/

Should I be doing something differently

or is there a good solution?

I’d really like to use these plugins.

    Please let me know.

plugin is broken Andy hasn’t updated it yet. They are doing bug squashing.

@Modemlooper, is there anything we can do to fix the plugin by modifying the code?

Perhaps not bringing in older posts.

Or not updating every 30mins when someone visits the group page.

Please let me know if we can cut out or fix some code.

Guess I’m just lucky, this time. I’ve got multiple RSS feeds on several different groups, with no duplication (although that issue did occur with earlier versions).

@Avatar .. Jeff, Rich @nuprn1 has posted his external-group-blogs solution in a couple threads. In bp-groups-externalblogs.php you can change lines 185 and 196 as Rich specifies:

    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/external-group-blogs-bug/

In short: get_activity_id should hash the posturl instead of blogurl AND you need to remove its action piece.

    — not ideal per a reference to blogurl to remove a feed, but working, 1.2.3/2.9.2 in production and higher versions in test. Rich also informed author Andy @apeatling and Andy has said he will get to it.

@jeffsayre @r-a-y et al. can this be closed and a couple of the less informative versions of this question, deleted? BG
