Folder to store members avatar profile picture

I am using a Word press theme and software where buddy press installed good. I found in my wordpress dashboard what folder to put to upload and store images for member’s albums. But i tried to change my own Avatar picture and upload my own and i got an error message. How do i set up this folder in my directory for members to upload and change the Avatar picture to their own? Also can i have my own Avatars to choose from for my members? If so how do i set that up also. One more question as well. How can they make their profile private to the public or just their friends?
