I am having the exact same problems. I see that other have been having this problem yet no one seems to be alarmed about it. I find it interesting that something so basic as setting up forums does not seem to work properly without a bunch of custom code, hard-to-understand menu settings, and ultimately code that does not work.

You’re not alone. The current version and the way to combine buddypress with forum is difficult as I found out with several people new to wordpress+buddypress.

In my testing, the next version of buddypress and bbpress is much easier.

@gordonre For issues with BuddyPress involving Commons in a Box, please post issues per http://commonsinabox.org/blog at http://commonsinabox.org/community

    Hi @mercime

Thanks but I’m not entierly sure this issue has anything to do with Commons in a Box.

I started from a fresh instal with Commons in A Box and BP 1.6.4 and everything is fine. Something happened in upgrading to 1.7 on an existing working BP site that went wrong …

    @wrowlands

I don’t think the solution is custom code and I wouldn’t say that the code ‘doesn’t work’. It clearly works for most people. It’s just something that went wrong with the instal (and seems to happen for a few people but not the majority). For my problem it was with the latest version(s) of BP but I also recall having it with 1.6.1.

@mercime we should update the codex and remove any instructions about using group forums, and make sure people use the plugin.

@djpaul I have updated the forums info last Jan 3, 2013 using bbPress plugin only -> see forums component listed at https://codex.buddypress.org/component/forums/ onto the page https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/ Just need to complete Group Forums only section – have some questions there.

    Great minds… 🙂

I think we should be de-emphasing a difference between group and site; BuddyPress supports just forums, and we add that if people want to add a tab to their groups, that they need to click a button inside bbPress.

Why can I not create topics in my group forums!?
This is ridiculous. I keep getting ‘There was an error when creating the topic’ yet it shows as being created in the groups home feed but forums tab is empty as there are no topics!
Its strange that this feature works when a group has no members or forums associated with it.
    Please help!!

@natesheridan if you still have this issue, please create a new topic with information about your installation – WP/BP versions, theme/plugins used, etc.

    Apologies for my rant!
I managed to resolve this issue by creating all the member forums first from WP dashboard and then assigning them to the appropriate groups from the members forum setting page from the front end.
It appears the issue lies with BuddyPress when trying to create member forums from the front end using the ‘allow group to have its own forum’ setting.
