Forums with Buddypress install

  • Dear BP forum,

I’m not sure if this is a bug or if I missed something, but I have already re-installed multiple times and cannot seem to figure it out. When I go through the buddypress install and follow all the directions, after the install there is a link in my wordpress menu for everything I had set up: groups friends, activity, etc. However, the page that I associated with the Forums portion of the install always disappeards.

I went through the forum portion and installed bbpress through the buddypress install, but still the page that I had assicoiated with forums in the initial install not only does not work, but disappears from the menu entirely.

I installed the buddypress template pack, and am using an artisteer theme along with it. I’m not sure if this would be the cause, but I cannot see how.

    Wordpress 3.2.1
Buddypress: latest version as of today

This is an extremely promising project, congratulations.

    Best,
    James

  • I couldn’t see how to edit my post, but here is the version information:

Wordpress 3.2.1 Clean install on the root directory (CentOS – Host: Webhostingbuzz)
    Buddypress: 1.5.1
bbpress: 2.0 (installed through the buddypress installtion process)
    Artisteer theme
Have not messed with core files.

I can go the the bbpress forums via the usual forum lint: http://www.mydomain.com/forums/, but I had articulated in the buddypress setup that discussion forums were to go to http://www.mydomain.com/families, and even though I have created a “families” page, the link does not appear on the menubar, and when I attempt to navigate to that page it is not merely blank, but I get a 404 not found, and in the addressbar there is just the domain: “mydomain.com”.

    Best,
    James

I think there’s some confusion between settings for bbPress 1.0 and 2.0. Understandable, as the instructions aren’t as clear as they could be.

The page mapping in BuddyPress setup, for forums, only works for bbPress 1.0. To do the same in 2.0, look at Settings > Forums, and there’s a text box for the base link. (Which also defaults to “forums”!)

    Paul, thanks for the reply.

Indeed, I think this is correct. I don’t know if you’re on development, but this is a seriously misleading install concern. I had to go into PHPadmin to make some changes to alleviate the conflict. I messed up there (my fault) and now need to do a clean reinstall.

If buddypress acts differently with 2.0 than 1.0 of bbpress then either 1) it should only install bbpress 1.0 in the setup process, or only allow it, or give a warning about it or 2) it should detect that bbpress 2.0 is being used and adjust accordingly.

    Regards and thanks again,
    James
