Frisco Child Theme

    @davidtcarson

    I just started creating a new a child theme called “Frisco”.

    The goal is to release it around the same time BuddyPress 1.3 comes out, if possible, so that BuddyPress users have a solid (and free) option for a theme that looks different than the default theme.

    Aiming for clean and simple. Ideally, it will just be a stylesheet and functions file. And the theme should be as responsive as possible so that it works reasonably well on mobile devices. It would also be great to add support for the more popular plugins, too.

    No demo site yet. But here are a few screenshots from my local setup.

    If you are interested in contributing or trying it out, please download it from GitHub and report issues. I’ve only put a few hours into it so there’s lots to do. I hope to update it a lot more in the coming days and weeks.

    https://github.com/davidtcarson/frisco

    Note: This theme is not even close to being ready to use on a live site. It has been tested locally only using the BuddyPress trunk (1.3-bleeding) as of today (July 17th, 2011). Download the theme only if you are going to install it on a development/local install of BuddyPress. Don’t expect anything to work normally after you activate this theme.

    If you would like to get notified when the theme is further along or the demo site is available, please head over to the theme site and drop your email in the box.

    @intermike Have you refreshed your cache? The dropdowns should have a dark grey zebra stripe. I think I committed that to the trunk yesterday. If not, check for an update tonight but I would try refreshing your browser cache first.

    I just got the latest version a few hours ago. For me, the menu only looks okay if I don’t assign a menu to the theme in Appearance > Menus > Theme Locations. If I do set it, then it looks like it does in my image above.

    Also, in the backend, I’m seeing this message:
    “You’ll need to activate a BuddyPress-compatible theme to take advantage of all of BuddyPress’s features. We’ve bundled a default theme, but you can always install some other compatible themes or update your existing WordPress theme.”

    Also, in your profile > Activity tab > Personal (when viewing another member’s profile) / Mentions / Friends / Groups, there is no spacing above the first activity stream item

    That’s all I could find! :D Good job!

    Another thing, I guess: Profile pages are pretty empty to the right of profiles – a looooot of space is wasted, especially when you’re using a small netbook like me. But I suppose, changing it might interfere with other plugins that place things there. Perhaps a setting in Admin where you could alternate the profile to use the space a little more better (per, or to have it like it is right now (so you could use other plugins). (Or, perhaps even a “sidebar” up there so we could stick some widgets/text/etc. in there if we wanted to?)

    Also, would be nice if we could have two sidebars, on the left and on the right, to make use of the room even more. (I really want this feature ;) lol)

    @davidtcarson :) Another thing: We have two search bars: one in the Buddy Bar up top and one across from the site logo. The one in the Buddy Bar is kinda useless though because it doesn’t allow you to select between Members/Groups/Forums/Posts. So, perhaps a tip in the Readme file for how someone could get rid of that one?

    @davidtcarson Loving the theme updates! The theme is lookin fricken awesome.

    I just noticed with the drop downs, the width of them aren’t automatically expanding to accommodate longer text (http://i51.tinypic.com/nwbthl.png)

    There also needs to be some CSS styling to the bbPress forums page (i.e. http://allmad.org/rants/)

    Thanks for your help testing it out and reporting issues, @InterMike.

    I’ve just added a theme options page so that users can choose from a few basic color choices and use a custom.css stylesheet if they want to override anything. Aiming to get some other basic options in there for fonts.

    For the custom stylesheet, check off the custom stylesheet option box in theme options, and create custom.css in the root theme directory.

    A reminder that Frisco requires BuddyPress 1.5 and WordPress 3.2.1 or 3.3 (nightly build).

    You can download the theme at https://github.com/davidtcarson/frisco/

    If anyone can help test browser compatibility for this theme, especially IE 7/8/9, I’d be very grateful. You can report issues here or on GitHub at https://github.com/davidtcarson/frisco/issues

    P.S. I’m pinging you @InterMike just to make sure you get notified about my last post with theme options info and custom.css usage. … I messed up your username in that post so you probably didn’t receive notification.

    Yes, I’ve enabled a menu, downloaded the zip from github, cleared my cache, crossed my fingers… but the theme continues to appear broken. Is anyone else having this issue?

    @davidtcarson

    @pjnu What version of BuddyPress and WordPress are you using?

    “Frisco requires BuddyPress 1.5 and WordPress 3.2.1 or 3.3 (nightly build).”

    @davidtcarson

    @pjnu To use the theme prior the official BuddyPress 1.5 release, you must consistently update both BuddyPress (https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk) and Frisco (https://github.com/davidtcarson/frisco).

    The BuddyPress team is making updates everyday to BuddyPress 1.5. And I am making updates almost every day to the theme. If your BuddyPress version has not been updated or the theme has not been updated, you should expect to see strange results.

    This will all settle down once BuddyPress 1.5 is released and Frisco theme is in the WordPress theme repository.

    @davidtcarson I thought this theme was for use with 1.5?? If so, I don’t know why it isn’t working on my 1.5 b2 install.

    Please clarify… is your theme for use with BuddyPress 1.9.2, 1.5 b2, or this trunk version you just shared? Do you have a link to current/detailed install directions? Thanks.

    David Carson

    @davidtcarson

    @pjnu I’m pretty sure I just did. If you’re not comfortable using the latest BP trunk or consistently updating the theme, I’d suggest waiting for BP 1.5 to be released and then download the theme from the WordPress theme repository as soon as it’s available.

    Wow, just discovered this theme and it looks GREAT! Definitely something I’ll be checking out once it’s in the repository. Are you releasing it for free? What about commercial projects, will you consider a paid version with support and updates so that it’s attractive as a long term solution for BuddyPress projects?

    David Carson
    Participant

    @davidtcarson

    @angslycke Yes, 100% free. It has been submitted to the WP theme repository and should be available soon. I will post another message once that’s up. The version submitted to the repository has some minor updates from the github version currently available. So it’s a good idea to wait for the theme repository version for a live site.

    `What about commercial projects, will you consider a paid version with support and updates so that it’s attractive as a long term solution for BuddyPress projects?`

    At this point, no. I’ll consider it if there is enough interest.

    @angslycke

    @davidtcarson Sounds great! Will wait for the version in the repository then. I think your theme will become really popular since there’s a huge lack of good looking themes and since it’s a child theme to the original theme and thus easier to update. Thanks again for all your work and count on me to help spread the word!

    Is it possible to add a customised logo? I’ve been playing around with some of the files but can’t seem to do this.

    I love the theme I’m using it made some modifications:

    – Created a archive.php and index.php to my liking with the same look as the theme
    – Added a floating sharebar to the posts
    – Modified the submenus to make them cleaner

    and a few others! thank y lot I love it —> have a look http://www.smartideabox.com

    I have a question is the theme breaking some jquery because bp-labs and rate forum posts don’t seems to be working.

    cheers

    @davidtcarson

    Good stuff, @nosoura

    Glad you like it.

    The theme should not break any jquery. It looks like you’re using a boatload of plugins – I’m guessing one of those could be interfering.

    Try deactivating plugins one by one to troubleshoot. Or try reverting to bp-default temporarily.

    I will be posting another entry about this, but the theme was just published in the WordPress Theme directory – https://wordpress.org/extend/themes/frisco-for-buddypress

    I’ve already fixed a few bugs since that initial version was uploaded. The newest version is currently under review and should be available soon. See https://github.com/davidtcarson/frisco or https://themes.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/5497 for the latest.

    @KylieSocial I’d recommend creating a `custom.css` file and then using a basic CSS image replacement technique. http://css-tricks.com/630-css-image-replacement/

    FYI – The theme is now available in the WordPress Theme Directory. This thread was quite long, so I’ve started a new one and maybe this thread can be closed now.

    @david carson

    I’m really enjoying the theme.
    I’ve done a few modification for the mobile theme to make it fit better.

    http://smartideabox.com/wp-content/uploads/bpfb/10_0.766544001317898530_mobile%20theme%20screenshot.png

    the css I modified:

    http://pastebin.com/HuBHLBgE

    I was wondering if you had a way of adding the My acount and notifications tab to the main menu bar? any ideas how to do that. I manage to do it but then the css style is all fucked up.
