Getting BuddyPress Working

I’ve started building a website using the Blackbird WordPress theme, which works really well for the sort of layout and editability I’m after. I want the site to be one where people can sign up and upload content to their own profiles – it’s going to be a niche networking site. So I’ve installed BuddyPress to do this.

But I’m kinda stuck. There doesn’t seem to be anything I can do with it! Under settings, I’ve got the BuddyPress page, which has a tab to toggle various features on and off, a second tab to associate a WordPress page with each BuddyPress component directory. And a third tab for four basic settings. That’s it.

For instance, there seems to be no template anywhere that I can edit for members to build a profile with. There’s nothing to build anything with as far as I can see. A rummage around in You Tube isn’t showing up anything about this.

    Any thoughts?

  • The template pack approach is all but redundant now with the imminent release of BP 1.7 which will work with any theme without having to go through the template pack process – you will likely not have performed the third step where you need to match the copied BP files now in your theme to your themes standard markup structure.

So if you’re just starting to build your site please do so with the beta release of 1.7 more than likely by the time you’re ready 1.7 RC t will be ready and even if not the beta is very stable and won’t change much other than to fix any little bugs found.

Hi Hugo. Thanks so much for your reply.

I’m building my site directly (nothing is downloaded on my computer). I’ve read there’s some way to do things by downloading and ftping up to the host site, but I have no idea how to do that. Is there any way I can install v1.7 directly from the ‘add plug-in’ page on my site?
