HEEELP! I activated BuddyPress and my site CRASHED!

  • I installed BuddyPress, activated, and went through the 5 activation steps. When I got to the 4th step, I chose “keep existing theme”, as this is a customized them, pressed “save and next” and then I got the terrible “ACCESS FORBIDDEN” screen. Now site is down, can’t access admin panel, and don’t know which files to delete/change from ftp server, to get back to old site… Pls help!

go to plugins and delete the BuddyPress folder

    Once you’ve done that:

    1. Ideally, set up a test environment and try your BuddyPress install / related dev on there first
    2. De-activate all your other plugins before activating BuddyPress — it’s likely a clash with one of them
    3. Set the theme to the default for now (you can change to yours later)
    4. If that all works, activate each plugin in turn to find the clash
    5. Finally, switch to your theme

    hello roger,
thanks very much for your quick reply. i’ve deleted the buddy press folder, but unfortunately that didn’t help… there must be some files that have been changed by the buddy press plugin during the setup process?

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. I have no access to admin panel or the site itself. All is 403. I’ve deleted the buddy press login. This is a very unfortunate situation – ideas are very welcome.

Could the plugin activation have changed the file permissions?

It seems that the file permissions are ok. I’m not sure whether there’s a quick way to display properties of more files at the same time, but seeing them one by one, all the folders i checked were 755 and files 644. Could it be an issue of one single file/folder having the wrong properties?

No one has any suggestions at all…!?

To Roger – this is meant as constructive criticism:

I’m very aware that you (I) cant expect help and “ready made” solutions whenever (the shit hits the fan?!) it suits you (me), but Im having a hard time understanding why you dont follow up, when your (initial very kind) help, didnt work. I must stress that this is meant in a constructive way. I hope its being read that way, too. By follow up I mean, that half a line from you saying “If that didnt work, I dont have any other suggestions” would’ve helped me – because then I could’ve started looking for solutions elsewhere.

@chrfriis Know that all of us helping out in the forums are unpaid volunteers living in different time zones and under no obligation to follow up with or respond to a question. In other words, we have lives outside of BuddyPress and WordPress. Roger has always been generous with his time in helping out in these forums. And if the suggestions given you didn’t work, then you should take the initiative to find out other solutions yourself.

Change to default theme, then when you can access wp-admin, change back to your customized theme. Roger mentioned this above but you haven’t posted whether you’ve done it or not.

    Hello Mercime,

Thanks for your input. As I stressed, I was trying to give constructive criticism. I meant no harm!

I work with DVD/BD authoring, and FCP editing – this is where I can help out others (and I do. Also very generously. And I do know all about the way forums work :-) ). In this area I’m relying on others, and as our support guy was out of reach, I had a very critical breakdown situation on my hands yesterday.

It didn’t make sense to me, that Roger spent time writing that I shouldn’t make identical threads, without at least – in the same post? – writing a line in response to me having followed his original advice. Anyone could probably tell that this double thread was a desperate action on my behalf, for which I apologized promptly.

I’ve been very careful trying to describe what I have on my hands here – If you read my first post, you’ll see that I can’t access the admin panel (so I CAN’T change to default theme!). And if you read the posts after Rogers input, you’ll see that deleting the buddypress plugin didnt help – in other words I still cant access my admin panel. And the entire wordpress site is down.

I respect everyones time! I value (very highly!) what I get from any forum! And I give knowledge back (in my field of expertise)! In this case it seems that because I offended someone, I was excluded. Everyone makes mistakes. I was corrected. And I stated my opinion about forum behaviour.

I’m in over my head. And getting more frustrated by this forum. I thank you for your time – I do appreciate your help. But I’m gonna have to wait for my support guy to return. Thanks.
