How do you get group home content when activity stream is disabled?

I do not need or want the activity stream enabled for my site. Whenever the activity stream is disabled, no content is displayed on each group’s home page “Home”. Is there any way to add specific content for each group’s home page, non-activity streamed?

How about enabling activity streams and then editing the theme files so that it doesn’t display stuff you don’t want to see?
