How does the search function?

Whenever I search on my Buddypress site, a bunch of unrelated users show up. I have not figured out how or why it shows certain users, because it even shows users who have absolutely no relation to the search term.
How does it find these terms, and how can I change the way the search works? Searching for just a name would be ideal for me.
