[How-to] Allow only 2 members to collaborate privately in BuddyPress Docs

I would like to have a situation where one user can write a document, and another can proofread and edit it. All privately. There doesn’t seem to be any direct way to do this – is there maybe a workaround? If you know of another plugin which may be more suited to this task, that would also be helpful.
I’m currently running:
Wordpress 3.4.1
BuddyPress 1.5.6
