How to display wordpress user profile/account details in buddypress profile page

I have buddypress installed but I have overidden the buddypress registration page. I prefer to use the default wordpress registration page because it is easier for me to not only create custom fields but apply data validation rules that suit my usecase (enforcing unique entries, regex format etc). I can not do this for the buddypress registration page.
How can I ensure that the wordpress user profile/account details (phone number etc) are displayed on the user’s buddypress profile page. I noticed that only the display name is shown by default. Can the user also control the visibility of this display? Any guidelines on how to achieve this shall be appreciated.
