How to make a network of multiple domain names

Hello all! This may be impossible but here goes…

Say I have the following domains all with buddypress wordpress sites running with bbpress forums also running:

    domain1.com
    domain2.com
    domain3.com

Here is a breakdown of how they forums look:

    domain1.com has the following forums: General, domain1stuff, domain2stuff, domain3stuff
domain2.com has the following forums: domain2stuff
domain3.com has the following forums: domain3stuff

Basically, I want those three sites to be able to share all users across all 3 sites and be able to register for all 3 domains on any of the 3 domains; however, when on domain2.com I want only the domain2stuff forum visible, etc.

Is this possible? I know with multisite you can only do subdomains or subdirectories… but can you create a network of multiple domains with shared users and shared forums?

    Any help greatly appreciated 🙂

    Hi @iwishiknew,

what you trying to achieve can be accomplished with WordPress Multisite (WPMU), except for the shared forum part (maybe it is possible, if it is, I don’t know how).

In a WPMU, you can have, through sub-directories or sub-domains, several high level domain using the Domain Mapping plugin. I use it in my personal blog and it works fine.

It is also possible to make one user to access the other websites in the network, without having him/her to register again.

With the foruns, I would create different bbPress instalations in each website. In this way, although the users base could be shared, the forums would be related to each particular domain in the network.

In a nutshell, I’d assume that what you want is possible, except for the shared forum part. If it possible, please, let me know.

    Plugins you’d use:

    Domain Mapping – https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/
    MU User Management – https://wordpress.org/plugins/multisite-user-management/

I dont want subdirectories or subdomains… I want completely different domains.

Is it possible to use those for completely different domains? ie domain1.com, domain2.com, domain3.com?

You can have different domains in a WP MU installation. But in case you don’t want to use WP Mu, there is a plugin in WPMUDEV that I think can make what you aim for.

http://premium.wpmudev.org/projects/category/plugins/ – Unfortunately i don’t remember its name, but I remember its job is to duplicate content and user across websites/domains.

    I think it’s this: https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/multisite-content-copier/

Not really what I’m looking for though…

    Maybe its impossible :C

Thanks for the help btw 😀

I don’t think this is the one, as this is related to a WordPress Multisite and it seems not your intent.

But test it out and see if it suits your needs. =)
