How to make admin bar into a multi-level drop down button?

I’m developing a custom theme and would like to have the admin bar items, such as Settings, Edit Profile, Notifications [#], Log Out, incorporated into one button with a multi-level drop down menu.
This article tries to explain exactly that – http://bit.ly/rQPvsn – but is not working for me. I do not see a drop down menu, just links, and I’m not sure what bp-functions.php is for and why the same coding as that file is written again where the button will be.
If anyone has successfully managed to get that to work, I’d really appreciate your feedback to find out what you did to get it to work. Or if there is another method to accomplish this. Thank you in advance.
