How to show activity stream on the homepage/sidebar?

    I am not referring to changing the site settings to show a static page..but would like to show the latest blog posts on the homepage and activity stream in the widget section.
    While there is a plugin to achieve this (BP Sitewide activity), its really ugly and I am looking for a more elegant solution.

    ANyone? TIA
