How to upgrade to a trunk?

I’m kind of a learn as I go guy and I’ve discovered that to get the functionality I want and remove the bugs that I have, I need to get on WPMU 2.7.1 and the latest BP trunk. That said, I’m in the dark on how to do that. From where do I get the most recent versions? What is an SVN? Since they aren’t packaged/official releases, are they mere files to overwrite what exists or is the upgrade more turnkey?

Would someone mind outlining the basic process through which one goes to get these intermediary upgrades installed? Sorry for the basic question; have to start somewhere. I should add, I’m not necessary looking for specifics (i.e. “download the latest version here”) as I’ll do the legwork; I’m trying to follow the process and get some direction for a novice.

Once you’ve done that, have a SVN client installed, and feel confident, go back to the first link in this post and follow the instructions.
