How uncouple one or more subsites from BuddyPress?

Greetings! I’m running BP latest (via Commons in a Box suite of plugins) on WP 3.8 multisite. I’ve assigned the BP main page to a subdirectory via wp-config.php so that (a) we can have a non-BP splash page, and (b) one or more of our subsites (which also are subdirectories) can exist separate from the BP pantheon…or so I hoped. I’ve not figured out, however, how to do this, as both the root site and any new sites I create as network admin show up as a BP site, include the BP admin bar, etc.
