I am unable to create any Groups in Buddypress

Hello, I have a problem that I hope someone here can help me out with.
I just installed the latest version of BuddyPress plugin over the latest version of WordPress, and was able to get everything up and running – with the major exception of the ability to create Groups. At first , whenever I clicked on the “Create Groups” button, it would lead to a blank screen. Now it just re-directs me to Yahoo Search Engine result page. I’ve checked everything, from making sure that Groups are enabled in settings, to checking the Permalinks, I even deleted and re-installed everything with the same results. I’m about at my wit’s end…….
Any help with this matter would be most appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Matthew, that sounds like a strange problem. When you click Create Groups, and you get the blank screen, this usually refers to a PHP error. Take a look at your webserver log for any messages around this time and let us know what it says

I’m sorry, I hate to sound like such a Noob, but I’m not sure where exactly to find the webserver log.
I host at Earthlink, if that’s any help….Thanks!

You’re best to send a support request in to your host and ask them where the webserver/PHP error log is.

I sent a report request in, but I haven’t heard from them yet (!), so I had to force myself to do some detective work on my own, in addition to asking for some help from more tech savvy friends.

I managed to find the error log file in my site’s websdoc folder, and located the PHP error message log files for the time I tried to create groups. I had to download the error files to my PC computer to open and look at them. And this is what it said ( of course, edited for security…. :) ) :

    [Tue Apr 27 01:58:29 2010] [error] [client XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX] File does not exist: /www/htdocs/domains/s2/00XXX/ ( “www.Myweb_site.com” ) /webdocs/(“My_Buddypress_Social_network_site_2”) /groups/
    [Tue Apr 27 07:06:58 2010] [error] [client XX.XXX.XXX.XX] File does not exist: /www/htdocs/domains/s2/00XXX/ ( “www.Myweb_site.com” ) /webdocs/(“My_Buddypress_Social_network_site_1”) /groups/
    [Tue Apr 27 07:06:58 2010] [error] [client XX.XXX.XXX.XX] File does not exist: /www/htdocs/domains/s2/00XXX/ ( “www.Myweb_site.com”) /webdocs/(“My_Buddypress_Social_network_site_2”) /groups/

Any idea what these error messages means? Is there a missing file somewhere? I installed the Buddypress installation twice now.
    Thanks.

Can anyone out there still help me with this problem?
( Cue sound of crickets in the background….. :) )
I really hope that this issue hasn’t stumped even the experts here……
I tried everything that I could think of, I even created *another* Buddypress installation, and ended up with the exact same result of not being able to create any Groups.
Simply put, If I am not able to create Groups, and even Forums, I just won’t be able to use Buddypress.
I’ll have no alternative, but to use something else ( ie Drupal, etc. ).
I really hope that I won’t have to do that, so I’m still open to any and all suggestions.
I’m sure that this exact problem has been encountered with at least one person out there in internetland, so this resolution would help with the greater Buddypress Troubleshooting knowledge base.
    Thanks in advance!

Just opened another browser (Safari) and there it all worked. See also: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/friendly-http-error-messages-causes-404/
    Thanks to @cce
