Image quality or compression of user avatars

The image quality of my users’s avatar is very poor. When they use gravatars the quality is much better. It looks like the compression is set too high. Is this set somewhere in Buddypress or WordPress or a server setting?

wordpresss but this filter can override the jpeg default (which is 90) `apply_filters( ‘jpeg_quality’, $jpeg_quality, ‘image_resize’ )`

Thank you for this. Is there any chance I can do the setting in my theme so it is not overwritten when an update comes?
