Image Upload Bug?

I installed my first BuddyPress plugin last night and it was giving me an error when I tried to upload images for groups or for my avatar. I just logged in here and tried to upload an avatar on buddypress.org and I get the same error message:
Upload Failed! Error was: Unable to create directory /avatars/8396456. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
I’m guessing this is a bug in the code since it’s happening at both sites? I’ve confirmed my directory is writable.
Can anyone else confirm this?
