Improving Performance (How do you Cache Buddypress)?

(I just tried posting this and ironically there was a error, so if it gets posted twice please delete one of them.)

The BP docs on Improving Performance basically say you need to implement caching, but I have not been able to find anywhere on this site (or others) a caching solution that works with BP. There are lots of posts on this subject here, but none clearly resolve the issue.

On that page you link to a post “regarding proper settings,” but there are no answers there, just unanswered questions.

Is it possible to cache BP? If so, what plugins should we be using and most importantly what settings should we use?

W3TC, SuperCache and other caching plugins do work with BP. What doesn’t work is object caching, like memcached. At least, not yet.

Is it possible for someone to put together a detailed guide on what settings should be used?

I know mileage may very depending on your hosting solution, but if someone could cover what settings effect BP that would be great.

Here is a guide from Rackspace – for their servers – but it’ll get you started.

Thanks for the links. It’s some good information on setting up CDN, but they don’t address caching and Buddypress.

From the bp-tricks article:

“Step 3: Installing and Configuring W3 Total Cache for CDN usage
Use the plugin browser to install W3 Total Cache and activate it. In the near future I’ll be posting an extensive guide for a more complete setup of W3 Total Cache, but due to the nature of BuddyPress that is a pretty complicated process.”

@gregfielding : The APC Object Cache Backed (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/apc/) plugin seems to work with Buddypress.

@gregfielding W3TC does not work with Buddypress (other than maybe very limited CDN). I wish people would stop saying it does, especially the developers. BP.org should also remove it from their recommendations for speeding up BP.
