Installing BP into a portion of a site

Apologies in advance if my lack of BuddyPress experience results in comical use of idiotic language…

I run a presentation consulting business (www.betterpresenting.com) and host an annual conference, whose web pages are a subset of the main site. I want to install BuddyPress to support the conference and create a community site for it. What I can’t figure out is how to manage the messaging. If I understand correctly (a reach at best), posts become messages. But I post at betterpresenting.com about a great many things, not just ones that would be for the conference community. So I see competing issues:

    1. If I were to keep the sites together, I would need to solve that problem.

    2. If I were to pull out the conference domain and manage it separately, I would need a separate install of WordPress and would then need to recreate my development environment, which in a few tests promise to be a PITA.

For the past decade, I have been comfortable managing multiple domains as subdomains, essentially being able to treat them all as one development experience. I would prefer to do that here, but don’t know how to solve problem No. 1.

Needless to say, I need some perspective and practical advice here. I would be grateful for any help I can get…
